Dec. 28th, 2009 @ 10:51 am Monday cookie looking for cosmic relief
Much human ingenuity has gone into finding the ultimate Before.

The current state of knowledge can be summarized thus:
"In the beginning, there was nothing, which exploded."
Other theories about the ultimate start involve gods creating the universe out of the ribs, entrails and testicles of their father. There are quite a lot of these.

They are interesting, not for what they tell you about cosmology, but for what they say about people.

Dec. 23rd, 2009 @ 09:38 pm Poe's Law In Action!
Current Mood: amused
POE'S LAW:Without a winking smiley or other blatant display of humor, it is utterly impossible to parody a Creationist in such a way that someone won't mistake for the genuine article.

Nobel Laureate Paul Krugman alerts us that Conservapedia is
trying to produce a “fully conservative translation” of the Bible — although “translation” seems to be a misnomer, since they’re apparently going to start with King James and fix it, rather than go back to the original texts.
Conservapedia's guidelines for this 'translation' say:

As of 2009, there is no fully conservative translation of the Bible which satisfies the following ten guidelines:
  1. Framework against Liberal Bias: providing a strong framework that enables a thought-for-thought translation without corruption by liberal bias
  2. Not Emasculated: avoiding unisex, "gender inclusive" language, and other feminist distortions; preserve many references to the unborn child (the NIV deletes these)
  3. Not Dumbed Down: not dumbing down the reading level, or diluting the intellectual force and logic of Christianity; the NIV is written at only the 7th grade level
  4. Utilize Powerful Conservative Terms: using powerful new conservative terms to capture better the original intent; Defective translations use the word "comrade" three times as often as "volunteer"; similarly, updating words that have a change in meaning, such as "word", "peace", and "miracle".
  5. Combat Harmful Addiction: combating addiction by using modern terms for it, such as "gamble" rather than "cast lots"; using modern political terms, such as "register" rather than "enroll" for the census
  6. Accept the Logic of Hell: applying logic with its full force and effect, as in not denying or downplaying the very real existence of Devil.
  7. Express Free Market Parables; explaining the numerous economic parables with their full free-market meaning
  8. Exclude Later-Inserted Inauthentic Passages: excluding the interpolated passages that liberals commonly put their own spin on, such as the adulteress story
  9. Credit Open-Mindedness of Disciples: crediting open-mindedness, often found in youngsters like the eyewitnesses Mark and John, the authors of two of the Gospels
  10. Prefer Conciseness over Liberal Wordiness: preferring conciseness to the liberal style of high word-to-substance ratio; avoid compound negatives and unnecessary ambiguities; prefer concise, consistent use of the word "Lord" rather than "Jehovah" or "Yahweh" or "Lord God."

Reminds me of this definition:
A fanatic is a man that does
what he thinks the Lord would do
if He knew the facts of the case.
--FINLEY PETER DUNNE

Dec. 23rd, 2009 @ 12:16 pm Recovering from fun
Last night I got to spend time with my friends [info]vgnwtch and T., her lovely husband. It was wonderful to see them...I've missed them terribly. We sampled Indian food with some of our dear ones at our old stomping grounds, and then saw "Avatar" at The Regal, where our small group once enjoyed many a weekend show.

Lovely!

Interestingly, "Avatar," was much, much better than I expected. It made my little anthropologist/Pagan heart sing. Wonderful! I recommend it highly.

But after several successive days and nights of Yule-related celebration and general carousing, I'm already off balance. I need sleep, I need regular hours, I need my SAD light and I *really* need my gym. I want my January daily calendar pages, too---it's hard to stay organized with all this activity.

I miss my healthy routine. As I get older, I find that the costs of departing from it get dearer and dearer.

Today: Work, wrapping, rest, sleep
Tomorrow: Gym, work, rest, sleep

Happily, the house is clean. :)
